The monastery is located at an elevation of approximately 1570 meters above sea level and stands at the precise site where Prophet Moses is believed to have seen the Burning Bush. The monastery was constructed in the town of Saint Catherine, at the base of Mount Sinai, also known as Jabal Mossa, where Moses received the Ten Commandments.
The monastery has historical roots dating back to the sixth century during the reign of Emperor Justinian I. It was later named after Saint Catherine in the eleventh century in recognition of her status as a Christian martyr from Alexandria.
